‘The Strain’ to End After Season 4 on FX

Currently in the midst of its third season, “The Strain” will return with Season 4 in summer 2017, marking the final set of episodes for the thriller from Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and Carlton Cuse.

Ending the series after four seasons was a creative decision made by the producers, according to a statement released on Tuesday by Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, presidents of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions, and another statement from Cuse, who said the original intent was for “The Strain” to last only three seasons.

“We sincerely thank Carlton Cuse, Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and their creative team as well as the fantastic cast for three exciting seasons of ‘The Strain.’ Though we’re sad to see it go, we fully support the way in which they are crafting the fourth season’s dramatic conclusion,” said Grad.

Cuse commented: “It is a true joy to work at FX where creative intentions always comes first. Our original plan was for the series to last three years. Once we began telling that story it expanded to be more. After finishing the writing on season three, Guillermo, Chuck and I looked at our remaining story and felt the best version could be told in one more season. We have a fantastic plan for an exciting and climatic season four. We are deeply grateful to FX for supporting our vision and for allowing us to end the show on our own timetable.”

“The Strain” debuted in July 2014. Based on the best-selling trilogy of the same name by Del Toro and Hogan, the series stars Corey Stoll, David Bradley, Kevin Durand, Jonathan Hyde, Richard Sammel, Natalie Brown, Miguel Gomez, Max Charles, Ruta Gedmintas, Rupert Penry-Jones, Samantha Mathis and Joaquín Cosío.

Cuse serves as showrunner, executive producer, director and writer. Del Toro and Hogan are writers and exec producers, along with other EPs Gary Ungar, J. Miles Dale, Bradley Thompson and David Weddle. FX Productions is the studio.

The third season is currently underway, airing Sunday nights at 10 p.m. Season 3 will conclude on Oct. 30.
