Crawlspace (1986) - REVIEW

Before I give a movie I haven't seen before I always check out the reviews to see what other people think about it.  Doesn't matter what is said good or bad because I am going to form my own opinion but nevertheless I still do it to just gauge the general public's consensus.  This particular movie held pretty strong criticism and a lot of negative reviews.   I found it on netflix about a year ago and decided to take a chance on it, having never seen a movie with Klaus Kinski in it before.

Karl Gunther (Klaus Kinski) owns an apartment building that he fills with only young women.  Karl is a very demented man who plays russian roulette on a daily basis and is addicted to torturing and killing.  A former doctor of death in Germany who now lives in the states but is not ready to stop what he does best.  To the naked eye he seems like a very quiet, soft spoken gentlemen but when the ladies enter their apartments he is crawling through the ventilation system always watching.  He has seemingly been getting away with everything for a very long time but that is about to change.  After 3 years of searching for him a man has finally tracked him down and is accusing him of killing his brother that was in the hospital under his care.  This is were Karl starts to lose it.  All hell is going to break loose and someone needs to stop what is about to happen!

I can see were all the negative reviews came from when I watched that movie but I have to say I loved it.  The story itself was nothing spectacular but it was enough to please the mind and eyes of this horror slasher junkie.  Another thing I really think that is a big contributor of me loving this film is the performance of Klaus Kinski.  Now I know this movie was made towards the end of his career and it probably was not his best performance but nonetheless I really enjoyed it.  He acts so cool and calm throughout the whole movie it just makes his character all that more intriguing.  I have read the accounts saying how hard to direct and just downright unruly Klaus was but I don't think it affected the movie in my opinion.

Scream Factory has come through again with this Blu Ray release.  I of course had it the day it came out a week ago and the transfer is awesome as well as the special features to boot even a Featurette mixed in there.  This one had been pretty hard to find on DVD with the only release being a double feature with The Attic that has been out of print since 2010.  Perfect for the holidays to have under your tree.  I would rate this film a 7 out of 10 stars.  I am probably alone in that high rating but what can I say.  Stay twisted everyone!

Headhunter: The Assessment Weekend 2010 - REVIEW

I did something this weekend, I haven’t done in a very long time. I took a whole day and just vegged out on movies. Since my internet has been out for a solid week now, I had to resort to watching Netflix on my iPad… sideways since they implemented this stupid “landscape only” mode… but don’t worry I was able to see it well enough to know good from bad.

A motley group of business students in Berlin, Germany sign up for Takahashi Corp’s assessment weekend, hoping to land one of the coveted spots with the consulting company. Under the watchful eye of a company psychologist, the team-working and improvisational skills of the aspirants will be put to the test in a survival-type situation. But nothing goes according to plan. The group arrives to find the base camp completely destroyed. Trapped in the woods with no food, no shelter and no way to communicate with the outside world, the real characters of the students come to light as one by one they start to loose their heads.
That’s their synopsis… Here is mine.
A group of business students unwittingly sign up for an assessment weekend hoping to land a job with a popular consulting firm. They all go bat shit crazy and start acting like a bunch of fucking idiots five minutes after discovering the camp they were headed to has been destroyed. Cut off from the world in a dense forest, all these muckity mucks have to pull together to survive. Thank the horror Gods that they have the quiet, timid underachiever who can go all Rambo at the drop of a hat AND that the company psychologist brought his handy dandy pistol in his wittle nap sack.

Apart from some decent acting, the only two things this film has going for it is that it was well shot and has some pretty nice cinematography (at times). Other than that, it’s not great, it’s not good, it’s not really anything but a waste of time. There is little character development so when a character flips from one extreme to the other you’re really left just scratching your head wondering where in the fuck that came from. Take the character of Brad for example… he’s clearly made out to be at the bottom of the class, grade wise and wants to do whatever he can to please the company psychologist including kissing his ass even when he’s hitting on his girlfriend. BUT once out in the wilderness he takes the lead and turns into some psycho version of a super boy scout setting traps and barking orders at everyone in the name of “safety first”.

Headhunter: The Assessment Weekend is a cluster fuck of ideas all rolled into one that never really pan out. We all know that twist endings are all the rage these days but they have to be well done. ALSO, if you start your film off by showing a sequence of the final scene, your twist ending isn’t going to be successful because your audience already knows how it ends. Furthermore, revealing just about everything in your trailer is a big NO-NO if you're wanting that surprise element to your film. That was another one that left me scratching my head. Regardless of how much running around the woods was done, you can't expect people to want to watch your film when you don't even take the time to complete your IMDb page. If you want to watch a “company getaway” horror flick, check out Severance. It’s far superior and has everything this one doesn’t.

Cutthroat Alley 2003 - REVIEW

As the era of social media and direct access to infinite knowledge is on the rise, so is video on demand and all the perks that come with it. One being that movie watchers can now stream films that they otherwise never would have heard of. Direct to DVD is becoming an endangered species as sites like Netflix, Amazon and a plethora of others offer instant gratification when you don’t want to get out and head to your local RedBox or whatever. Such is the case with Cutthroat Alley. It’s one of those movies that I’ve brushed passed on Netflix a million times but never had much interest in watching. Might’ve been the cover art, might’ve been the description, who knows but It’s not often you see come across a slasher with an all black cast and the obligatory white guy (LOL) so I decided to give it a go.

Not everyone in the hood is out to do drive by shootings, get high and join gangs. Take Robinson Jacobs (Cisco Reyes) for example… a guy out to break the stereotype. Since the death of his father, he’s turned his life around and has big plans to go to college and get a degree and get him and his girlfriend, Angie (Marquita Joyce), out of the hood. Just as he’s about to leave, a serial killer emerges and starts killing off his friends one by one. As the bodies pile up, fingers start pointing in Jacobs’ direction and with the cops closing in and his friends and family turning against him, he must find and stop the killer before it’s too late.

I honestly wasn’t expecting much of this one but the acting was pleasantly surprising. Reyes does a great job as the leading man and Joyce does an equally good job as his damsel in distress. Josh Watson played the timid Winston (the obligatory white guy) to a tee. Jose Turner breathed life into the character of Bones, the misunderstood ex-con that just wants his life back the way it was. It happens quite often that a film with a small budget will sacrifice quantity over quality and in turn some aspect of the film will suffer and it usually ends up being the acting. However, I’d be hard pressed to pick a bad apple out of this bunch. Everyone held their own quite well.

Cutthroat Alley moves along at a steady pace and while there are some inconsistencies, none are so bad that they’re worth mentioning. The writing, directing and cinematography were very well done. I found it quite interesting how Folsome played on misleading his audience. I know, I know, just about every whodunit film in history does that but not all of them are this well done. In fact, I didn’t see the ending coming at all. There are subtle hints throughout the film that when the killer is finally revealed you’ll kick yourself for not figuring it out sooner. Gore hounds might be a bit disappointed as there isn’t much blood and guts but it doesn’t need it. Not being familiar with director Timothy Wayne Folsome’s work, I looked him up and unfortunately he hasn't done anything (other than a short film) since this one. I will however be sure to seek out some of his previous films. In the meantime, this one is available now on Netflix instant and I’d definitely recommend a viewing.

The Horror Show (1989) - REVIEW

The Horror Show is an almost forgotten slasher movie from the end of the 80's era.  I say forgotten because it hasn't been available to purchase in so long in the US.  When it was released overseas it was titled House III which led people to believe it was the third of the House movies but it really wasn't.  Bearing no similarities to the previous 2 installments so if that is what you are looking for you are not going to find it.

Detective Lucas McCarthy (Lance Henriksen) is hot on the pursuit of the serial killer named Meat Cleaver Max (Brion James).  Before he finally apprehends him he loses his partner, and watches a little girl murdered by the hands of Max.  Max is put to death by electrocution but does not go easily.  Now that he is dead all Lucas is haunted by the nightmares that ensue and the fact that Max is still out to get him and his family even after his death.  Max's murderous rampage has not stopped and Lucas is the main target.  Lucas slowly starts to lose it seeing the killer everywhere he goes.  He somehow needs to find a way to stop this before he loses his family to a madman!

There are two other movies from the same time period that are very very similar to this movie.  Those being The First Power, and Shocker.  So I really can't say the story is really original.  The plots are almost identical in all three with a killer being put to death and somehow coming back to kill again.  It's not so say I didn't like the movie though.  What really saves this one and puts it apart from the others is the cast.  Lance Henriksen is stellar as always and Brion James plays one of the best portrayals of a killer I have seen.  Brion James is so creepy, intimidating and just downright fuckin evil.

I had never seen this and ordered the Blu Ray that Scream Factory just released.  I can't say it was a pleasant surprise or anything like that but it was not a bad flick.  I can say I enjoyed watching it but I was really wishing the story was a little more original.  Probably not a movie I can watch over and over again but I'm sure it is something I can pop in every now and again.  Mainly for the performance from Brion James he really does make this movie more enjoyable if you are in the mood for a good old fashion horror film.  I would rate this 5 out of 10 stars.  As always, stay twisted everyone!

Final Casting Announcements for Robert Hall’s “FEAR CLINIC”

LOS ANGELES, CA – Dry County Entertainment, founded by director Robert Green Hall (MTV’S Teen Wolf, Laid to Rest, Lightning Bug) and Fear Chamber LLC, are proud to announce the final round of casting details for their upcoming production of the feature film FEAR CLINIC.

FEAR CLINIC began as a 2009 horror series for FearNet that consisted of five episodes starring up-and-coming talent like Lucas Till (X-Men: First Class) and Kate Nauta (Transporter 2) as well as horror icons Danielle Harris (Halloween 4), Lisa Wilcox (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4) and Kane Hodder (Jason Voorhees). The series and upcoming film stars Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise) as Dr. Andover, a fear doctor who treats patients afflicted with crippling phobias by inducing hallucinations inside his exposure therapy invention; The Fear Chamber. The series, which focused on a different phobia every episode, received critical acclaim including two 2010 Streamy Awards (Best Sound Design and Best Visual FX for Hall’s company Almost Human) and reached over five million hits on FearNet.com. It has since been added to On Demand and mainstream channels Youtube and Hulu, making it the most-watched horror web series in history.

The project has been in active development for a feature film, written by Robert Hall and Aaron Drane. The story has seen a shift from the series, however; instead of the episodic nature of the original show, the film will focus on a variety of phobias that all stem from one traumatic event.

Grammy award-winning music icon Corey Taylor, vocalist and frontman for rock bands Slipknot and Stone Sour, has joined the cast. Taylor was named one of the Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time by Hit Parader. He is also a writer whose novel Seven Deadly Sins: Settling the Argument Between Born Bad and Damaged Good skyrocketed to bestseller status within days of its release. The Stone Sour two-volume album House of Gold and Bones has also recently been adapted into a comic book format. FEAR CLINIC will see Taylor in the role of Bauer, one of the employees of the clinic who struggles to keep things under control when all Hell breaks loose.

Felisha Terrell (Days of Our LivesI) who wowed viewers with her recurring role as Kali on MTV’s Teen Wolf, will reunite with director Robert Hall as she joins FEAR CLINIC to take on the role of Osborn, a therapist at the clinic and second-in-command to Dr. Andover (Robert Englund).

Also attached to the project is Brandon Beemer (Days of Our Lives, The Bold and the Beautiful) as Dylan, a famous moto-cross rider who will stop at nothing to protect his girlfriend from the darkness plaguing their lives.

These talents join previously-announced FEAR CLINIC cast Robert Englund, Fiona Dourif, Thomas Dekker, Kevin Gage, Cleopatra Coleman and Angelina Armani.

The film may be a more mature realization of the concept from the series, but at the heart of the story it focuses on the cerebral nature of fear itself and the manifestations it can take for different people.

The film opens with a tragedy that launches five people into the public eye and enlists Dr. Andover to lend his expertise to help them overcome trauma-induced phobias. A year later, terrifying ‘aftershocks’ rattle the survivors, leading to them finding their way back to the fear clinic seeking answers. As they line up for another turn in the chamber, Dr. Andover believes that something more sinister may be at work.

FEAR CLINIC is currently filming for a Halloween 2014 release.

Project updates can be followed on social media. Visit https://www.facebook.com/fearthecure , @fearclinicmovie on Twitter, or @robertgreenhall to keep up with the director’s transmissions from set.

About The Philip K. Dick Science Fiction Film Festival:
The Philip K. Dick Science Fiction Film Festival is the first of its kind to grace the screens of New York City and is organized by filmmakers who understand the difficulties and challenges of telling a unique story in a corporate environment. The inaugural festival from December 7-9, 2012 drew record crowds of over 1,000 participants for the exclusive screening of Radio Free Albemuth which was based on Dick's 1985 novel posthumously published three years after his death. The Lille, France event from October 25-27, 2013 screened celebrated international films and enjoyed much success in the first of many global outings. The festival continues to hold seasonal gatherings across the city and will also pioneer a Spring 2014 cyberpunk festival in Tokyo and the Blade Runner Retrospective at the Museum of Moving Image in Astoria, New York. The mission of the festival is to uphold the stature of original voices and visions in works submitted and recognize the phenomenal themes of Philip K. Dick. Lastly, this is a festival by filmmakers for filmmakers.

About Philip K. Dick:
"Reality is whatever refuses to go away when I stop believing in it." - Philip K. Dick
Philip K. Dick (1928-1982) was one of the 20th century's most profound novelists and writers within the science fiction community. His exploration, analysis and beliefs led to the publishings of 44 novels and 121 short stories. Dick's enormous library of works led to several film developments including Blade Runner (1982), Total Recall (1990), Minority Report (2002), Paycheck (2003) and most recently Radio Free Albemuth (2010), The Adjustment Bureau (2011) and the successful remake of Total Recall (2012). The film industry is also awaiting the release of King of the Elves in 2014, which will surely be yet another prosperous depiction of Dick's literary contribution to science fiction. Dick's enormously effective views comprised of fictional universes, virtual realities and human mutation foresaw an exaggerated version of the current state of government and contemporary life. Though he is gone in the physical form his philosophies live on in the techniques applied to modern stories and films and generate large displays of appreciation and understanding.

Indie Horror Icon Bill Oberst Jr attached to "Slay Utterly" - PRESS RELEASE

CHICAGO, ILL. – Filmmaker Stuart Wahlin announced horror icon Bill Oberst Jr. is attached to Slay Utterly, both as an actor and a producer. The film, to be shot in 2014, is a modern adaptation inspired by the Villisca (Iowa) ax murders of 1912, which were also the subject of Wahlin’s 2013 documentary, The Ax Man Enigma, which built a compelling case pointing to a lone “Ax Man” being responsible for dozens of eerily-similar murders throughout the nation’s heartland during a two-year period.

Slay Utterly will be the writer-director’s second feature film. Wahlin’s first narrative feature, Hand of Glory (2012), earned the filmmaker “Best Director’ at the Prairie State Film Festival in Chicago last year, and “Best Actress” for Heather Dorff (Truth or Dare, What They Say).

Having earned over a hundred credits in a five-year period, Oberst is considered the hardest-working actor in horror, if not indie film as a whole. Among numerous awards and accolades, Oberst recently took home “Best Actor” from the Pollygrind Underground Film Festival in Las Vegas for his role in Coyote, which also won “Best Picture.”

“Bill is much more than just a horror actor,” Wahlin said of his film’s star. “He’s a tremendously-talented artist who’s going to win an Oscar someday. Though I think his fans will get what they expect from him, this a film that gives Bill a little more depth to flex his acting prowess in a very conflicted, sympathetic role.”

Twisted Central Interviews Jim Towns: Director of "House Of Bad"

TC: How did you come about working on the project House of  Bad?

JT: Back in college I’d had the basic idea of a story about three sisters on the run with a suitcase full of drugs they’ve stolen. Back then I was working in comics, so I originally envisioned it as a graphic novel-type narrative. As the years went by and I focused on other projects, I moved from writing and drawing comics to writing and directing films, and (what would become) House of Bad evolved with me.

TC: What is the plot of House of The Bad?

JT: Three struggling sisters- an ex-con, a stripper and a junkie- hatch a plan to steal a suitcase full of heroin from the stripper’s drug dealer boyfriend. Their plan is to lay low in their old childhood home up in the hills and wait for the heat to die down, then head south and sell the stash and retire in style south of the border. Unfortunately a lot of bad stuff happened in their old house, and the place is haunted by the ghosts of their father and mother. As the girls hunker down to wait, the house starts turning them against each other. Meanwhile the dealer is searching for them, so it becomes a question of whether they’re in more danger if they leave, or if they stay.

TC: What kind of Horror movie is this? Slasher? Supernatural? Suspense?

JT: I like to call it a Horror Heist film. The film’s a bit of a mashup between thriller and supernatural horror. It’s got a strong dramatic story, as well as a healthy shot of action gore in it, as well.

TC: Do you enjoy working in the horror genre?

JT: Absolutely. The genre has so many nuances to explore, so many different styles to embrace. I could do a dozen horror films and never repeat myself in style or story, it’s such a malleable medium.

TC: Any other projects that you are working on that you would like to share?

JT: I wrote and am producing a horror western called A Man with a Gun, starring Tony Todd, and I’m directing a supernatural detective story called 13 Girls. Both of those should be shooting in 2014. I have a zombie sitcom called The Living End I’m pitching around right now trying to find a network/channel to produce it, and there’s another project I’m developing with Sadie Katz (Sirah from House of Bad) that should be a very sexy type of ghost story.

House of Bad will be released December 3rd and is available for pre-order on Amazon.com.

Phantasm IV: Oblivion (1998) - Review

Since I have reviewed all of the other Phantasm sequels I suppose I will review this boring piece of shit as well.  This came out in the late 90's at a time when the horror genre had seen better days but was getting better with the releases of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer.  I was just getting into the Phantasm series of movies and when I heard about this one I was beyond excited because the previous installments while I really enjoyed them always left me confused as shit and this one promised to explain it all.

Continuing right were part III left off, Michael (A Michael Baldwin) has been transformed and the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm) has him right were he wants him.  The only thing is he does not want to kill him yet, he wants to show Michael the origin of everything.  How the Tall Man came to be and the meaning of what he has been doing this whole time.  Reggie (Reggie Bannister) is still hot on the case and is determined to save Michael but Michael no longer wants his help.  Jodie (Bill Thornbury) is still around to show Michael things but Jodie is not what he appears to be.  The end of the Phantasm series is here, what will happen to top it all off??

This movie definitely wasn't made to impress anyone.  The underwhelming effects, the shitty storyline and well all the actors were getting older and their performances showed it.  I did like the use of deleted footage from the original movie that was used that was actually pretty cool but that is the only comliment I am really going to give this sequel.

I was really excited for the story to finally be explained and I should have known that it would still leave me confused and saying what the fuck!  From beginning to end I really hated this movie.  I really wanted to like this movie and have some closure but part iv definitely leaves more questions than answers.  If you are a fan of the series well then you have to see it at least once but it's really not a likeable movie and you should keep your expectations super low.  Mine were way too high and I was kicking myself in the ass for spending 3.95 renting this from Blockbuster.  As always, stay twisted everyone!

About The Philip K. Dick Science Fiction Film Festival:
The Philip K. Dick International Film Festival of Science, Science Fiction, Fantastic Film and the Supernatural and the first of its kind to grace the screens of New York City is organized by filmmakers who understand the difficulties and challenges of telling a unique story in a corporate environment. Following a successful 2012 inaugural year, 2013 marks the second annual Brooklyn festival which will expand it's genres of films and panels and its recent first international event in Lille, France. Guest speakers and writers that best represent the goals of the festival will attend the opening ceremonies. We look for original voices and visions in works submitted.
