Tales From the Crypt Season 1 1989 - REVIEW
Definately one of the best anthology shows to be made in horror history. Tales from the Crypt, a comic book in the 50's, was made into a TV series that premiered on HBO on June 10th 1989. Hosted by a puppet character called The Cryptkeeper and packed with big Hollywood stars. The Crypt keeper introduced every episode in it's 7 season run that sadly ended in 1996. While all of the seasons were nothing short of incredible, the first season is the one that got it all started. A mere 9 years old and I could not get enough of it. Season one consisted of 6 episodes:
1. The Man Who Was Death - Bill Sadler plays a man who worked for a prison as the executioner. When the death penalty is abolished, he loses his job. This did not stop him from taking matters into his own hands and becoming a "shocking" vigilante.
2. And All Through The House - The ultimate Christmas horror story. An escaped mental patient (Larry Drake) is on the loose in a little town and everyone is told to stay in their house till he is apprehended. One particular suburban housewife (Mary Ellen Trainor) did not get that memo. She has just killed her husband and has problems of her own.
3. Dig That Cat.... He is Really Dead - A man on the street named Ulric (Joe Pantoliano) is taken in by a doctor and given money to be his experiment. When Ulric wakes up he learns he had the gland of a cat in him now that will give him 9 lives. So many possibilities for this condition.
4. Only Sin Deep - A tale of a young hooker (Lea Thompson) overcoming a would be pimp and killing him. She try's to pawn his valuables and the broker will not take any of her stuff because it's "hot". But he does offer her 10,000.00 for her beauty. Seems the pawn store owner is into Voodoo.
5. Lover Come Hack To Me - A Nasty tidbit about a newly married couple getting stuck in the middle of nowhere on their wedding night and forced to stay the night in an empty mansion that no one has lived in for a very long time. Fortunately the bride (Amanda Plummer) knows exactly what she is doing.
6. Collection Complete - When a man retires he likes to spend time with the woman he loves and find something to do with himself. In the case of Jonas (M. Emmet Walsh) he spent so much time working that his wife (Audra Lindley) did not know what to do now that he was home. Her cats and dogs have kept her company for so long that she does not know how to act with Jonas around. Until Jonas finds a new hobby that helps with too many animals in the house.
Robert Zemeckis directed so many great episodes of Tales from the Crypt. He did not direct all of them but he did his fair share. Including my favorite episode of it's seven season run "And All Through the House". I am such a sucker for killer Santa's. Season one was the building block for a long and probably one of the most well known horror series in television history. Every episode has a new star to showcase and no episode was alike. Each episode was so well directed and edited thanks to the big budget they had to work with. And who can forget that handsome devil The Cryptkeeper who was voiced by John Kassir. To me every aspect about this show is unforgettable. I celebrate the entire collection and probably watch at least an episode or two on a weekly basis. Tales from the Darkside and Creepshow came first but to me no anthology will ever match the wit and sheer horror of Tales. Stay Twisted Everyone !
First Peek Inside Dark Cinema
Los Angeles, CA – After a successful shoot on Halloween day, The Dark Cinema – hosted by indie horror actor, Bill Oberst Jr (Take This Lollipop, Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies, Dismal, Scary or Die) – is now in post-production. Producer Cheryl Compton and Director of Photography George J. Toland III expect to have the project edited and ready for prospective buyers by the first of the year.
The Dark Cinema is a half-hour anthology show featuring short horror/thriller/sci-fi films from around the globe. The pilot episode, which centers around the theme “Evil Toys” boasts award-winning shorts from the United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal and the United States.
“Bill did a wonderful job of channeling his inner Rod Sterling. I can't wait until everyone gets to see what a great host he is.” Compton continues, “The look and feel of the footage and photographs George captured is exactly what I envisioned when I came up with the concept for the show. We like to call it crushed velvet with a hint of visual mildew. George, along with set decorator Maureen McGuire, brought what was inside my head to life.”
The concept for the production set is very simple, explains Compton, “McGuire (who has worked on such films as Iron Man, Ocean’s Thirteen and Cast Away, just to name a select few) found the beautiful theater seats in a Los Angeles area prop house. They have just the right patina and scuffs to make the set look like a vintage movie house.”
The Dark Cinema will be releasing preview trailers very soon – not only in English, but, in keeping with the international flair of the show, also in Spanish and German.
Anyone who contributed to The Dark Cinema’s IndieGoGo crowd funding campaign at the appropriate level will receive this official photograph, autographed by Oberst, as part of their incentive package.

MGM to Remake The Town That Dreaded Sundown
It appears MGM is at it again. Fresh off the heels of the Carrie reboot, Variety is reporting that they are in the developing stages for a remake of The Town That Dreaded Sundown, a film based on several unsolved Texarkana murders in 1946 believed to be linked to the Phantom Killer.
According to Variety "MGM had no comment but the Lion has been asking agents for possible takes from writers to reboot the Charles B. Pierce film."
MGM has been focused on reboots since it emerged from bankruptcy in early 2011 with Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum as co-CEOs. Upcoming projects include Hercules and The Magnificent Seven.
Bad news for some who are a fan of the original but good news for those that feel movies from this era can benefit from the advances in technology.
Scream Factory announced back in October that 'Sundown' would be getting a DVD/Blu-Ray release some time in 2013. Check out their Facebook page for more information and until then, enjoy the original trailer below.

AMCtv.com Interviews Steven Yeun
Steven Yeun, who plays Glenn on AMC's The Walking Dead, talks with AMCtv.com about post-apocalyptic romance and his expertise at being a hostage.
Q: Season 3 Episode 7, "When the Dead Come Knocking," is intense. Was this your first time ever being taken hostage?
A: You know, I'd been held hostage the first year, and then I was held hostage by my own people going down into the well last season! But this year, it was cool to show a little bit of mettle to Glenn, to see what he'd become.
Q: Do you feel like you're now trained to be able to escape from a similar strapped to a chair situation, if one ever arose?
A: It wasn't as difficult as it seemed, luckily. Turning over the chair on your back isn't easy, but standing up on it while being strapped to it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. It was a blast. I hope I'd be as good. But if anyone is smart, they'd strap my legs to the chair as well.
Q: Do you have a favorite walker kill from this season?
A: Having the experience of choreographing that whole struggle of chair breaking and then coming alive and having to hit that walker in the head with a jagged chair was satisfying. That was awesome.
Q: The group gets to kill lots of walkers this season. Was it an actor's dream come true?
A: It was awesome. Trying to figure out new ways to kill these things is fun, as well as choreographing all that stuff. It's satisfying to kill one. People get into it. When we're filming and the responsibility comes to you to kill a walker and you're like, "Everybody trusts me to do this," it's a feeling that permeates from the character to the actor.
Q: Melissa McBride (Carol) talked about how the prison offered some comfort from the Georgia heat. Did that make it difficult to look like a survivor of a zombie apocalypse?
A: Being outside in the heat is always nice when you're trying to look miserable, but air conditioning is always good. You have to sit there and readjust to the surroundings, but somehow the set crew designed the inside of the prison to be just as disgusting as the outside. I don't know what they did, but it sucked in there too.
Q: In the moment when Glenn and Maggie get taken prisoner by Merle in Season 3 Episode 6, "Hounded," were you hoping they'd be able to get away?
A: I think they made a mistake in that moment and let their guard down. That's what happens when you have love in the apocalypse! The stakes aren't as high in the real world -- if you were to go shopping for baby formula, I don't think someone would come up to you and steal your girlfriend. But in that situation, it's almost terrible to have that attachment.

Q: Is Michael Rooker as frightening as he seems?
A: Michael Rooker is quite the character, he's in it. He's Merle. We just played it real. There's a lot of trust with us that's awesome. You just kind of have us play out something, and just film it. It's not such a grand process; it's just everyone's game and everyone's down to try something new and make it look good. It's a collaborative effort that goes surprisingly fast.
Q: Were there any sort of personal adjustments that you added to that scene?
A: Just kind of the whole feeling of what happens when you're pummeled. I tried to play up how painful it would be to get around when your ribs are almost broken, your face almost broken, and all. Also, I tried to incorporate what you do when you're in that much rage -- it was a whole process.
Q: Glenn and Maggie have a scene where they wake up in the guard tower. How'd you get up there?
A: They build out everything on the prison, it's crazy, but the only thing they didn't do was build steps up to the guard tower! So we had to take a crane up there, which was a fun experience.
Q: Glenn has emerged as one of the leaders of the group. Is this a situation you've ever been in yourself?
A: For me personally, the challenges of this season were about filling the holes left by the people that we lost. There are a lot of amazing actors that aren't there any more. As that happens, a little bit more responsibility is put on you in the weight you carry. So I feel like I've been dealt the same amount of responsibility on the show that Glenn has been dealt, and that growth has been almost one to one as each season has gone.

First Clip from Slasher Feature The Laughing Mask
Director Michael Aguiar recently completed production on the
horror title Creeper. This title
dealt with the potential horrors of the internet and social media. Now, Pendragon
Productions and Aguiar are in development on another horror project, titled The Laughing Mask. In the vein of the Saw franchise and Brendan

The Laughing Mask initially confines a young woman in the

selfishness, this mother murders her child in order to get her life back. Yet,
the Laughing Mask sees this act as it truly is: an act of murder and neglect.
The Laughing Mask now looks to punish this mother in gory fashion as seen in
the film’s first clip (below).
The Laughing Mask
is currently in the development stages of production. Aguiar and
cinematographer Kyle Fritsche are moving ahead with script production and they

underway.

Children of Sorrow 2013 - REVIEW
It's not every day I get to attend a film festival in LA so I was really excited about traveling to California for Shockfest Film Festival. Escorted by actor/director Alex Ballar, we made our way to Raleigh Studios for the "For Kids... Not" screening block that included two short films, Adam and Kill Devil Hill (my review here) and the feature Children of Sorrow. I was pleasantly surprised to see a packed audience for the return of the Rogue River duo, Jourdan McClure and Ryan Finnerty.
Ellen (Hannah Levien) is on a mission to find out what happened to her sister. Her last known location was a compound in Mexico where she had gone to "find herself". Simon Leach (Bill Oberst Jr.), the enigmatic leader of the cult, happily accepts her into the fold and introduces her to their way of life. At first she's hell bent on finding out the fate of her sister but the longer she's there, the more she starts buying into the cult type rhetoric and is systematically sucked into their lifestyle. Simon uses his influence to break them down one by one, exposing their weaknesses and leaving them completely vulnerable so he can step in and fill the void. He convinces them that his way is the only way and eventually manipulates them into doing the most horrific things.

The thing with most Indie films is that often times they will suffer in one area or another because of a lack of funding. It seems inevitable these days that a film either has a great cast or a great visual story. Thankfully, McClure seemed to have a strong grasp on the casting part of this conundrum. What had to be an emotionally draining experience on them, each and every cast member played their part to a tee. It's been a while since I've seen a film where the commitment of the actors was so fierce. Oberst dominates the screen (as always) and gives the performance of his career. It's hard to know his personality and imagine that he could even come close to capturing a character with this degree of sadism. He is nothing less than mesmerizing on screen, especially in this film. The perfect storm of perversity.
Shot in four different perspectives, Children of Sorrow delves deep into the inner workings of cult life. We get little glimpses from Hannah's camera as she secretly films her infiltration of the camp. Father Simon records his ventures citing posterity reasons. Mary (Whitney Nielsen) takes the reins when Simon decides he wants to be in front of the camera. Lastly, we have the security cameras. This is where we get to see the true Father Simon. In front of the camera, he may seem like a confident, loving person but behind the scenes, he's really a self hating, manipulative, controlling con artist that gets off on playing with people's emotions. In my opinion, there is nothing more horrifying than the deliberate terror that one human can inflict on another and writer Finnerty weaves quite an entangling web of truly intense horror.
While I thoroughly enjoyed this film and will highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a hard core psychological horror, I did feel at some point the direction of the film got lost. I'll explain... the first quarter to half of the film, the main focus seems to be all about Hannah finding her sister but somewhere in the midst of this, it shifts and becomes all about Father Simon. It's possible that it was intentional and that the more she became seduced into the family, the more irrelevant her story became. In which case, I would've liked to have seen a smoother transition into that story line. However, this absolutely does not take away from the fact that this is a truly terrifying look into the cult psyche. Forget jump scares and things that go bump in the night, this is how real horror is done.

Ombis Theatrical Poster and Clip Released
DefTone Pictures Studios will be releasing, over the next several months, three exclusive clips from their film Ombis. Although principal photography is over, the journey of Ombis is far from. Now with editing in the final stages, the adventure is about to begin! DefTone Pictures Studios, which is known for its’ controversial short film series Black Guy on a Rampage, is on the verge of releasing their alien-themed epic Ombis.
Ombis takes place in the peaceful village of Metzburgh where the townsfolk go about their daily activities in unaware bliss. In the midst of this idealistic backdrop enter the hideous virus Ombis which is intent on taking over the planet Earth and changing its residents into a host for a new species. With the Metzburgh quickly becoming infected, a few unaffected people must fight off the destructive virus along with the alien bounty hunter that has come to destroy it, a vicious killer known as the Nemesis.
Plot Synopsis: Peaceful, rustic Metzburgh is a quiet village which was a former industrial town whose glory days are long past after the collapse of Metzburgh Grain. Teenager Mark Lowe (Jason John Beebe) and his ex-girlfriend Lucy Greenheart (Sarah Manzella) are stuck in a lovers quarrel when a meteorite crash lands in the passive community. Glen (Robert Bozek ), an ex-employee of the grain silos who became homeless after the collapse of the mills, stumbles upon the fiery crash. Unaware that his find could be dangerous, he gets too close and a chemical poison sprays out of the meteorite, enveloping him. The chemical agent known as Ombis begins to turn his insides into a slimly substance. Unable to stop the spread of the infection, Glen runs onto the road where Mark and Lucy find him. The two take him to the only Doctor in town, Doctor D (Deborah Manzella).
Mark and Lucy are shocked by their gruesome discovery and immediately contact the local Sheriff Thomas Brackett (Richard Satterwhite) who is on a date with a lovely waitress Daisy (Kathy Murphy). With their date being interrupted, they aid the traumatized love birds. With no sign of the creature or its victims, Brackett dismisses Mark’s fantastic story. Quickly returning to where the meteorite crash landed, Mark finds a new horrific discovery that the meteorite wasn’t the only creature to crash land on Earth.

With the towns folk overrun by the virus and the collateral damage adding up, a special containment team shows up to try and keep order and contain the plague. The human struggle of the residents of Metzburgh and their fight for survival then begins as the village is overrun with the alien invasion and the mutated humans that it creates.
“I remember laughing to myself during the original script process saying; I don’t know why I am writing a scene where two characters are in a police car driving down a street. I know I won’t be able to actually do this. Not on an independent budget and resources. Fast-forward a year later we are shooting two characters driving down a village street in a police car for a scene in Ombis. The scene features two great actors Richard Satterwhite and Aryn Fitzgerald and has become my favorite scene of the film” says director Adam R Steigert.

(Nov 21, 2012) Director Jourdan McClure's Children Of Sorrow has won the top prize at Hollywood's Shockfest Film Festival. The found-footage horror feature about a desert cult received The Shocker Award following its Los Angeles premiere at Shockfest.
Bill Oberst Jr. won the Best Actor Award for his role as cult leader Simon Leach in a surprise win over better-known nominees Tom Sizemore and Joe Esteves, brother of actor Martin Sheen. The Shockfest awards, in the form of ghoulish decapitated zombie heads created by make-up artist Shaun Martin, were awarded in a midnight ceremony in Hollywood at historic Raleigh Studios.
It's the second time in a row that Children Of Sorrow has had multiple wins at a festival. For Bill Oberst Jr. the Best Actor win is his third major award of 2012, following a Daytime Emmy Award for Facebook's Take This Lollipop and the Golden Cobb Award for Best Rising B-Movie Actor.
In the film's first published review, film critic Mike Thomas gives Children Of Sorrow 5 stars, calling it "a study in true horror." McClure says that Children Of Sorrow will continue to make the festival rounds with an eye towards a 2013 release date. The film's trailer is below:

Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 1987 - REVIEW
Years after his brother went on a murderous rampage, Ricky (Eric Freeman) is committed to a psychiatric hospital for evaluation from his recent actions. Seems it may run in the family. After remembering everything from what his brother had done, Ricky is now the disturbed one. Ricky went on a rampage of is own and has become a full fledged psychopath. After telling the doctor about all the murders he has committed, and playing them all back. He then decides to do away with the doctor and escape the hospital. Ricky is out and looking for someone in particular to take his rage out on. Will he find what he is looking for?
I realize that the description of the movie is really not that long. The reason being is that majority of the movie is a rehash of the original. The producers of the original wanted part 1 re-cut and add just a few new scenes and pass it off as the sequel. The final cut of the movie is indeed not far off of that but they did add more than just a few scenes to make it a true sequel and give the audience a little something. The movie itself is not good at all, but has all the qualities to make it fun and easy to enjoy. The acting like the movie in general is just horrid. I honestly has not seen acting this bad in a movie before. There are no big name actors in this. The only 2 worth mentioning are Eric Freeman who did alot of work on In Living Color for a while, and Elizabeth Kaitan from Friday the 13th Part 7 and various soft core porn movies. They wanted to interview Eric Freeman as a special feature part of the dvd release but were unable to locate him. As of right now his whereabouts are unknown. The original release of the double set featuring 1 and 2 has long since been OOP due to licensing issues. Anchor Bay however evidently worked all that out because on December 4th they are releasing the double pack again.
I do enjoy watching this yearly around the holiday season. It really is a fun movie to watch. Nothing really scary or even creepy about it but it has the qualities of a slasher mixed with alot of cheesy comedy. While this does nothing to really satisfy the fans of the original, it gave them something to chew for a bit. There are a total of 5 sequels in the franchise, but only the first 3 have continuity to the original story line. All the sequels really lacked the success the original found on video cassette. I suppose the franchise has somewhat of a cult following. I went years without seeing the rest of the sequels until they were released a few years ago as a triple set. The 3rd is OK, the 4th and 5th really are terrible. If you are looking for a good horror movie to watch this holiday season I recommend Black Christmas. If you want a good slasher I recommend the original Silent Night Deadly Night. If you want a good laugh with a little blood watch this, or at least skip to the point in the movie when the famous line is said by Ricky "Garbage Day"! Stay twisted everyone!

First Clip from Texas Chainsaw 3D Released
The first clip from Texas Chainsaw 3D has debuted at Machinima and you can check it out in the player below!
Opening in theaters on January 4, 2013, the horror thriller stars Alexandra Daddario, Tania Raymonde, Trey Songz, Keram Malicki-Sanchez, Shaun Sipos, Thom Barry, Paul Rae, Scott Eastwood, Richard Riehle, Gunnar Hansen, Marilyn Burns, John Dugan, Bill Moseley and Dan Yeager.
Continuing the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, the film picks up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.
Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars…
